My Favourite Childhood Story

Last tutorial class, I was assigned to tell about my favourite childhood story in front of my class. So, the title of the story given is “The Ugly Duckling”. This story is about a small duckling that seems to look a bit different from other ducklings, and will become something else when it grows up later.

About this story, I really like reading it because it is one of my favourite English stories ever since I was a kid. I never read much stories in English as I read a lot of Malay stories like Pak Pandir, Mat Jenin, Sang Kancil and so much more. The day that I start reading English stories is since I was standard 1 in my primary school. I could remember that there are many books in my standard 1 class which I can choose and read all of them during recess time.

Throughout this story, the main character of this story is the ugly duckling that is a bit different from other ducklings. At the beginning of the story, the ugly duckling is described as a strange and an ugly duckling, not like others as its body has grey feathers but not white. The other ducklings seem not like it at all because it looks very ugly. Then, it feels lonely and thinks that everybody around it hates it because of its difference. Consequently, it runs away from the place he belongs to and continues its journey. Throughout the journey, there are incidents that occur to it until it has to risk its life. In the end of the story, it realizes that it changes become the beautiful swan.  In this story, I really like the ending part of the story because it shows the new beginning life of the ugly duckling as the beautiful swan.

The moral value can be seen clearly throughout this story is true happiness life is not an easiest way to find. From the whole story, we can see that the ugly duckling is not accepted and hated by Mother Duck and other ducklings because it is an ugly duckling but not same like them. So, it runs away from them and goes some other places to find the true of its life. At the end, he finally finds his true life when it becomes the beautiful swan and meets its friends with the same kind.

On the other hand, the plot of the story is simple and interesting for young readers. This story contains simple words and sentences in order to make young readers easy to read and understand the whole story.

Based on my past experience on this story, I think it is suitable for children as it shows how the main character of the story develops at the beginning until the end of the story and gives good moral values to children. By reading this book, children will teach them something valuable in their lives. Besides, it will make them think and imagine critically about the story that they have read.

Story Review : "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson

Gruffalo...Oh, Gruffalo! What kind are you actually...? All readers might be wondered what the name of "Gruffalo" is because they never heard it before.

"The Gruffalo" story written by Julia Donaldson is very unique. It is about little tiny mouse decides to explore the deep, dark forest. As he meets with a variety of predators, he deceives all of them by telling them about a monster he has named the Gruffalo. As he meets a fox, an owl and a snake, he manages to convince them that they do not have time to eat him, because a huge ugly and scary monster is lurking in the woods, ready to eat them. Terrified, they hurry away. But, of course, the Gruffalo is just only mouse's imagination, but really exists in the wood and tries to eat mouse. What will happen next? Does the mouse still survive or die when he meets the Gruffalo?

The title of this story itself is ironically interesting. I also feel curious what kind of this animal is. Is it the combination of animals names, giraffe and buffalo? Well, I think some kind of like that. The author of this story brilliantly make children feel curious to read the story. Children will think deeply on what kind of that creature in the story. Besides, children really like to know the thing that they never see or think before.

The author portrays the character of little mouse as a brave and brilliant character. He cleverly deceives all the  predators who want to eat him by telling them about the imaginary creature, the Gruffalo and they do believe what the mouse has told to them. Believe or not, the Gruffalo does really exist.  When he meets the Gruffalo, once again he deceives the Gruffalo by using his clever brain to avoid from being eaten by the Gruffalo. It shows that even the mouse is a tiny mouse, but he uses his brain to solve the problems. The character of mouse can be associated with children as innocent, timid and fragile. This story possibly teaches the children need to think rationally and calmly when they are facing problems in life. Whatever the problems they faced, they have to think before making the right decision. Think before act! As a reader, I think that the author of this story successfully puts some good values within the story but, the weakness in the story is it also tells about the lies against the truth. For example, the mouse tells lies to all the enemies and successfully run away from them. However, it is still good for children to read this story. It is really fun and enjoy. Children will never  regret by reading it. I can guarantee that...

Story Review : "Edwina the Emu" by Sheena Knowles

What a great work done by Sheena Knowles, the author of "Edwina the Emu". This bestselling story is the sequel of "Edward the Emu". The main character of this story, Edwina is blessed with ten eggs with her spouse, Edward. So, she asks her mate to take care of the eggs while she decides to find a job to support the funds of raising her babies. Every job that she has taken is ended up with a failure but she does not give up easily, so, she gives her effort to find a suitable job for her. Finally, she realizes that all things she has done are totally wrong, so, she decides to take the full responsibility of taking care of the babies while her husband goes out finding a job.

This story is really suitable and interesting for children as it uses simple sentences and language to make easier to understand the whole story. I think that it is good for all readers to read this story even though it is a children storybook. Adult readers also can read this story because they can perceive the way of this author writes this story with such creative idea. The author puts the element of sense of humor in the story to make the story more lively and interesting, for example, Edwina becomes a waitress serving foods and drinks to human being. The illustration features in this story is really nice and beautiful as the pictures will grab the children attention to read more and more.  The illustrator of this story, Rod Clement did his job well as he illustrates the pictures magnificently based on the story. Of course, children really like reading books with lots of pictures. Overall, i really like reading this story very much. Outstanding work, Sheena Knowles!!!
